Barrie was brought up in BC's Okanagan Valley, and having obtained his doctorate in organic chemistry in Melbourne, Australia, served as a professor at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, for 26 years as the head of the Pesticide Research lab focusing on environmental analytical chemistry. After having retired early, he spent several years in the private sector before moving to Victoria with his wife, Phyllis. Barrie has been president of the Humanist Association of Manitoba and the Victoria Secular Humanist Association. He continues to be active in pursuing environmentally-oriented interests with the EcoHumanism committee of the VSHA, and as a long-time amateur orchestral musician.
